Picking the right tomato
Not sure if you are confused by all the varieties of tomatoes you see in supermarkets and why some are more expensive... Here is the deal. The more expensive ones were on the plant longer, and that means more flavor, less acid, more sugar, and better flavor. The extra time takes more resources to keep the plant going, so they are more expensive. Did you know that the conventional ones, or cheaper ones are actually picked while still hard and green? They are easier to ship this way. Then they are gasses with ethylene gas to induce them to turn red. That is why they have no taste. They essentially have not ripened. Take the time to try a vine ripe compared to a conventional. You will see the difference in sweetness. |
