How to pick an avocado When you pick an avocado, you want to make sure that is has slight give. When you feel it and lightly press it with your thumb, you should sense that it will indent with a little bit of pressure. The other thing you should see is that the avocado is black, and the stem piece comes out easily. Too soft and the avocado will be mushy. Too firm and it will have no flavor, and will be difficult to manage.
